Jonas Brothers Road To Oscar?

The new Jonas Brothers concert film opened at number 3, making slightly more then $12 million dollars. This was not what Disney was expected. Clearly they'd like us to THINK the Jonas Brothers are more popular then they really are! The movie was outgrossed by "Madea Goes To Jail" (#1) and "Slumdog Millionaire" (#2). While it's doubtful their movie career is going to take off don't count them out of an Oscar just yet. There is at least one original song in this concert that was performed exclusively for this movie. That means they could get an Oscar nomination in the Best Song category should the Academy want tween viewers to tune into the show next year. Will it win? Doubtful, but if an original song is performed by a popular artist I assume it to have a good chance at garnering a nomination regardless of the quality. The Academy has done this before and they'll do it again.

Benjamin Does Great At Box Office

In a world where box office is having more of an effect on the Oscars, and where a good box office run can help your film in the voting, it should be noted that since opening David Fincher's "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" has garnered a cool $43,726,913 to date, a respectable figure that is likely to grow as word-of-mouth spreads during this crucial winter break period. So for what my moneys worth, I'm saying Benjamin is in.

"Frost/Nixon" Kicks Butt At The Box Office

"Frost/Nixon" continues to show that it is a contender this Oscar season. First there were great preview reviews. Then the full reviews came in and they were great. Now the film has opened to the public. Granted, it's in limited release, on a mere three screens in the entire country, but it's still making lots of money on those few screens. To be precise, it made around $180,000 this weekend on those three screens. That's average $60,00 per screen, which is more money then "A Beautiful Mind" made on those screens, and this is a good sign that the public will warm up to the film easily when it's released country wide.

Weekend Box Office

I think it's about time we check to see how the movies did at the box office this weekend:

Well, the new Nic Cage movie was number one. But only $7 million? Ouch, that can't be good. Nice to see "The Dark Knight" hanging in at number four. I'm sad to see "Disaster Movie" hanging in there, but it won't be long before it's dumped on DVD to be dumped in a land mine two years down the road.
